Playing Poker with Andy Garcia

You see the movie Ocean’s Eleven. All that high stakes gambling and caper suspense gets you so pumped that you buy tickets to Las Vegas right away. You find a casino, and sit down to play some poker. “Look at the fish, boys,” you hear to your right. You look up and are now staring into the eyes of Andy Garcia, best known for his portrayal of Terry Benedict in Ocean’s Eleven. If Andy is anything like his character, he’s mean, ruthless and a masterful poker player. There is a way to beat this guy, but it will require a lot of luck and even more skill.

First, you will need to learn everything you can about Andy before you can make any moves. For the first couple of hands at your new table, fold everything but 10-10 or above and AK. You need to observe Andy Garcia and place him within a style of play. Judging from his Benedict character in the movie, Andy probably plays tight-aggressive poker. In the film, he’s a smart and successful businessman who squeezes the most he can out of every deal, but he also knows when to fold a hand. These types of players are very hard to defeat in cards, but it is doable. Usually, you will need to take them out in one big hand.

In order to get a one hand KO on Garcia, you will need to do a little bit of acting or “go Hollywood” as it’s called in the online poker world. See a couple of cheap flops, maybe show a bluff once or twice, or even ask some questions about what beats what. Hopefully this will throw up a smokescreen that averts the other players at the table away from your true skill level. Andy will make an assessment on you within he first 15 minutes of you sitting at the table, so once you have established yourself as a beginner, you can start to work towards defeating your target. Observe him, try to pick up on any tells, and just lie waiting to strike. The time to attack is when you know that Andy has a strong hand but you have the nuts.

Say you are dealt a low pocket pair such as 4-4. Andy raises, you call, and everyone else leaves the pot. The flop is an Ac-4s-Kd. Andy bets ¾ of the pot. This is great for you. You can put Andy on an AK, A-face card or K-face card. The only thing that could beat you at this point is pocket aces or pocket kings. At this point, since you have already established yourself as a fish, you should raise big. Andy will think you are trying to buy the pot and raise you. Go all in, he’ll snap call and flip AK, you flip 4-4, the next two cards are a 9 and an 8 and you can go ahead and brag to everyone about how you beat the great Terry Benedict in poker.

It can really suck a new player’s bankroll completely dry!

# 6 Try more obvious LAG or super-aggressive bullying after you’ve attempted all-inning your game, as by betting a huge amount, your goal is to intimidate opponents into staying away from the bad pot odds they have and compelling them to discard play. This is a chancy move and you should risk most but not your entire stack when calculating and making this move.

#7 Apply a basic poker strategy for keeping marginal hands in position if you want to play a tight aggressive game that is upgraded to a secure win. For this you need to use position to judge marginal hands and their total worth, thereby putting a limit to the probable losses and increasing max gains.

#8 Tournament winning strategy is incomplete without applying blind attacks! More than cash games, blind attacks are a great strategy for tournament play as these require a player to targeting others who are in the blinds and then moving to steal their chips. This works best on weaker opponents because they are not capable to defending themselves.

Beware of Luckiness in Poker

Being lucky is rarely ever a bad thing, especially for games of chance like poker. Of course you’d want luck on your side during a match! However, the trouble begins when you only rely on luck to win matches. A player that depends too much on random variables will make for a very poor and incompetent competitor in the long run. In order to attain true poker luck and good fortune, deliberate planning, mathematical savvy, hard work, and dedication must be practiced. You have to make your own luck so that when luck betrays you during a match in the form of bad beats and a losing streak, you’ll have your experience and skill to fall back on.

Lucky Poker means Bad Poker

This is the truth about being lucky in poker: It’s only going to take you so far, and it’s going to make you worse at playing poker, especially if you start using your luck at getting flukes and producing bad beats against your opponents like some sort of crutch. Luck can never be a substitute for skill even though being lucky can help you become successful at what you’re doing, even if it’s just playing poker on the Internet or with friends. Let luck be your worst enemy in poker, because that means that it’s your only hindrance to winning a game outside of human error and a superior opponent.

Different Types of Luck

Being lucky in ultimate bet poker is different to being lucky in, say, betting in baseball. To be true, betting in baseball relies a bit on your knowledge in the sport, but luck plays a bigger part in sportsbook betting than it does in placing bets in poker. For one thing, you have a lot more control of your so-called luck when it comes to betting on sports than playing poker. Playing the lottery is an even more extreme example of luck’s powerful hold on the results. The bottom line here is that you need skill to be good at poker in the long term, yet luck is enough to get you through it in the short term. However, by being too enamored by beginner’s luck, you may end up playing worse the luckier you get.

Bad Poker Players Have All The Luck?

It’s common sense. Depending on random chance is a surefire way to get worse at playing poker. You cannot bottle and save a lucky streak for future use. Poker variance and randomness are factors that are outside of your control. Because there’s an element of randomness to it, a poker player should bet on things that are certain—his bluffing skills, his experience, his intuition, and his poker math abilities—to win the day, poker variance or no poker variance. Don’t wait for your luck to run out so you’re left with poker skills that have been corroded by neglect. If you have to rely on miracles, then invest on getting some poker skills as well to assure success on both fronts.

The Lost City Poker Movie

Andy Garcia’s The Lost City is an ambitious period piece. It is set in 1950s Havana at the height of the political turmoil of that era. The title alludes to an idyllic past in a country lost to upheaval and revolution. At the opening of the film, Fico Fellove, played by Garcia, has it all: a country that he loves; two loyal brothers, Ricardo and Luis, played by Enrique Murciano and Nestor Carbonell; a popular Havana nightclub; and a caring father, played by Tomas Milian. By the end of the film, Fico will have lost all of these things to the chaos that is slowly choking Cuba to death.

The problems begin when Ricardo is arrested because of his communist sentiments. Fico pulls some strings with the local government to release his brother. Ricardo, furious with his being detained, joins with communist revolutionary Che Guevera to plot a coup to overthrow the dictator Batista. Meanwhile, the democratic Luis takes part in an invasion of the presidential palace. It fails, and Luis is assassinated by Batista’s secret police.
Fico is devastated by the death of his brother. He goes to comfort his brother’s widow, Aurora, played by Ines Sastre. Fico and Aurora soon start a romantic relationship and fall deeply in love.

It is around this time that Batista flees Cuba and Fidel Castro and his communists seize control of the government. Ricardo is given a high-ranking office in the new regime. One of Ricardo’s responsibilities is oversight of the seizure of lands for the state. He goes to take control of his Uncle Donoso’s land. Donoso is upset by the news, has a heart attack due to the stress, and dies. Ricardo is wracked with guilt and commits suicide. Fico, having once again lost a brother, is distraught to the point of depression.
Fico’s personal life takes a hit with the ascension of the communist party. His club is placed in stasis when the Castro controlled musician’s union strikes. It is firmly opposed to the use of the saxophone, an instrument that it sees as an imperialist instrument of oppression. All union musicians refuse to play at Fico’s club. Also, Aurora is chosen to be the Revolutionary Widow. She goes to work for the state and leaves Fico. At this point, Fico cannot go any lower.

Fico’s parents take this opportunity to advise their son. They realize that there is nothing left for him in Cuba. They persuade him to travel to America so that he may have a chance at a future of happiness and security. Fico comes around to the idea, even though he loves Cuba. He approaches Aurora and begs her to come along, but she refuses. When he reaches America, Fico gets a job as a dishwasher. He resolves to rebuild his life and to one day return to the land that he loves.

Fico Fellove’s story is the opposite of the American dream. He starts off as an affluent businessman, but, even though he works hard, he soon loses everything. Fortunately, the film ends with a positive message of hope and perseverance. Fico, finally in the land of opportunity, can now work towards creating his ideal life and finding his lost city.
